Beginner Mahjong Classes

A good teacher saves you a lot of confusion. Here is where to look, and what to ask.

Applies to: All four-player styles, mostly American mahjong

To find beginner mahjong classes near you, check public libraries, community centers, senior centers, Jewish community centers, and event sites such as Eventbrite and Meetup. Local game shops and tile sellers sometimes run lessons too. Before you sign up, ask which style they teach, how long the course runs, and whether you need your own card or set. Many classes teach American mahjong, but not all.

Where classes tend to appear

  • Public libraries and community centers. These are often low-cost, and sometimes free.
  • Senior centers. Many are open to all adults.
  • Jewish community centers and synagogues. Long associated with American mahjong.
  • Adult education programs. Check your local college or school district.
  • Event sites. Search “mahjong lessons” with your town’s name.
  • Independent teachers. News reports describe growing demand for instructors. Ask around at local groups.

What to ask before you sign up

  1. Which style do you teach? Make sure it is the one you want to play.
  2. How many sessions? One session gets you started. A few sessions let you practice.
  3. How many people per table? Learning at a table of four is ideal.
  4. What should I bring? You may need a current League card for American mahjong.
  5. Is there a next step? The best classes lead to a regular game.
  6. What is the cost, and what does it include? Prices vary a lot, and we do not list them here.

What a good first class covers

  • Naming the tiles.
  • Building the wall and dealing.
  • Taking a turn.
  • The Charleston, for American classes.
  • Playing a practice hand with help.
