Loading the Tile Trainer…
This trainer teaches you mahjong tile names in the style you play. Each round shows one tile and four names. If you miss a tile, it comes back soon. If you get it right, it comes back later, with longer gaps each time. This method is called spaced repetition, and it is a simple way to make new names stick. Five minutes a day works better than one long session.
How to use it
- Choose your style. American players say Bam and Crak, while Riichi players say souzu and manzu.
- Leave the letters on at first. The small numbers and letters are there to help you.
- Turn them off once you feel ready. Use the switch at the top. It is good practice for real sets, which often have no Latin letters.
- Stop at five minutes. Your progress is saved on this device.
What each style calls them
| Tile | American | Hong Kong | Riichi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bamboo suit | Bam | Bamboo | souzu |
| Character suit | Crak | Character | manzu |
| Circle suit | Dot | Dot | pinzu |
| White Dragon | Soap | White Dragon | haku |
Tips
- The first Bamboo tile often shows a bird, not a stalk. Ours shows a sparrow.
- On the character suit, the red character below is the same on every tile. The one above tells you the number.
- Numbers in Chinese are easier than they look. One, two, and three are simply one, two, and three lines.
