A good mahjong party is simple: one or two tables of four, a set for each table, snacks away from the tiles, and someone patient to teach. You do not need to be an expert to host. Here is what to plan, what to print, and how to keep new players comfortable.
- Host your first mahj nightA full plan, from invitations to the last hand.
- What to bringA short list for guests and hosts.
- Table CompanionA phone helper with dice, a dealer tracker, and setup prompts.
- PrintablesCheat sheets, tile charts, and a host checklist.
A quick checklist
- Decide which style you are playing. Tell your guests in the invitation.
- Make sure there is one full set per table.
- Set up a square table with four chairs and good light.
- Print a cheat sheet for each new player.
- Keep drinks on a side table if you can.
- Choose how you will keep score, or whether you will at all.
Seasonal ideas
Mahj night does not need a theme, but one can be fun.
- Winter: warm drinks and a slower, teaching-focused evening.
- Lunar New Year: a good time to learn about the game’s Chinese roots, with respect. Our history pages are a good start.
- Spring: a new American card usually arrives around then. Make a night of learning it together.
- Summer: move the table outside if you have shade, and watch for wind on light tiles.
New to the game?
If you have a game coming up and you are nervous, read the beginner’s guide, practice the Charleston, and tell the group you are new. Nobody expects you to be fast.
