For a mah jongg night, a guest usually needs only a current League card, a cheat sheet, and a good attitude. Hosts bring the set, racks, dice, and a table. Ask your host what the group expects, because some groups share equipment and others ask everyone to bring their own. If you are new, tell them in advance, so that someone can help you settle in.
If you are a guest
- Your own current card, if the group plays American mahjong. Buy it from the League, and do not expect to share.
- A quick-reference sheet. Print ours. New players often keep one beside them.
- Glasses, if you need them. Tiles and card print can be small.
- Your own rack, if the host asks.
- A small snack to share, if the group does that. Check first.
- Something for scoring, like a pencil, if the group keeps a tally.
If you are the host
- A full set per table. Check that you have all your jokers and flowers.
- A rack and pusher for each player, if you play American style.
- Two dice.
- A square table and comfortable chairs.
- Good light.
- A table cover, if your surface is slippery.
- Small plates and napkins, away from the tiles.
- Spare cheat sheets.
Before you leave home
- Take a few rounds in the Tile Trainer.
- Run through the Charleston Trainer once.
- Skim table etiquette.
- Add Table Companion to your phone. It can roll dice and help you remember steps.
What you do not need
- Your own set, unless your host asks for one.
- A perfect memory for the card. People keep it open at the table.
- Experience. Tell the group you are new, and most will gladly slow down.
