Mahjong Tiles

Here is every tile, what it is called in each style, and how many appear in each set.

Applies to: All styles, including Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong tiles fall into a few groups. Three suits, called Bamboo, Characters, and Dots, each run from 1 to 9, with four copies of each. Then come the honors: four winds and three dragons. Some styles add flowers and seasons, and American sets add jokers. So a set can have 136, 144, or 152 tiles, depending on what you play.

The three suits

Bamboo, called Bams in American play and souzu in Riichi.
Characters, called Craks in American play and manzu in Riichi.
Dots, called pinzu in Riichi.

The honors

The four winds: East, South, West, and North.
The three dragons: Red, Green, and White. American players call the White Dragon Soap.

Bonus tiles

Four flowers and four seasons. Hong Kong players set these aside. American players use them in hands. Riichi leaves them out.
The joker, used only in American mahjong.
