How to play

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile-matching game. It is not the same game as four-player mahjong.

  1. Find two matching tiles that are both free, then tap each one.
  2. A tile is free when nothing rests on it and its left or right side is open.
  3. Matching tiles leave the board. Clear every tile to win.
  4. Flowers match any flower. Seasons match any season.

Keyboard: arrow keys move between free tiles, Enter chooses, H gives a hint, U undoes, R redoes, P pauses.

No moves left

None of the free tiles match. You can step back, rearrange the remaining tiles, or start fresh. Shuffling keeps the board winnable when it can.

Mahjong Classic

Mahjong Classic is the traditional stacked layout of Mahjong Solitaire: 144 tiles arranged in five levels, in a shape often called the Turtle. You clear it the same way as any other board, by matching free pairs. This page keeps that one layout, for when you just want the familiar game with no choices to make.

The classic shape

The base has 87 tiles in rows of different lengths, with three more at the sides. Above it sit layers of 36, 16, and 4 tiles, and one tile crowns the stack. That top tile often needs to go early, since it blocks the four below.

How to approach it

  • Clear the center early. The tall middle stack traps the most tiles.
  • Watch the side tiles. The tiles at the far left and right sit at half height and block long rows.
  • Work long rows from both ends. The top and bottom rows have twelve tiles each.
Identical tiles match. Look for pairs that free more than they take.
