Daily Discard Puzzle

One hand, one question, every day: what would you throw away?

Applies to: Riichi mahjong, thinking about speed only

Loading the Daily Discard Puzzle…

Each day, this puzzle gives you the same 14-tile hand as everyone else. You choose one tile to throw away. Then it shows how far each choice leaves you from waiting, and how many useful tiles remain. The hand is chosen so that one discard is clearly the fastest. It looks only at speed, so it leaves out score and safety, which also matter in a real game.

How to think about it

Ask two questions for each option:

  1. How close does this leave me? Fewer tiles to go is better.
  2. How many tiles would help me? More is better.

This idea is often called tile efficiency.

Two tiles waiting on 2 or 5 give up to eight useful tiles. Two tiles waiting only on 5 give up to four.
